The Greatest Show in Carolina
Otherwise known as the North Carolina State Fair! (but from December through the first Monday in April that title goes to the unanimous #1 'Heels).
We took an afternoon to visit the state fairgrounds in Raleigh to eat the food, ride the rides and see the real contry folks come out of the woods. The fair is notorious for being the place where you can find almost anything battered and fried. You know, candybars, macaroni and cheese, cheesecake, tires...ok not tires (coming in 2011 I hear). Anyways, the best new culinary find this year were the Wisconsin Cheese Sticks - well worth the $7. Imagine what it would be like to eat a deep-fried heart attack and pretty much yep, that was them. Fantastic! Also good were the grilled corn on the cob and the deep fried MilkyWays. And the girls loved the cotton candy (see the above photo).
Of course there are the obligatory rides ($2-6 per person per ride) which are outlandishly priced, but cleverly set up in such a way asto be everywhere thus appealing to tired kids who subsequently scream incessantly if denied the chance to take a 45 second spin on a ride, therefore guaranteeing parents have no alternative but to submissively cave to their hollering children and let them ride (consequentially forking over a weeks wages in only 15 minutes). Did you get all that?
